One Theory to Rule Them All
Volume 5, Issue 41 - article #19
Joseph Silk
,
Science - Volume: 330, Issue: 6001
Drawing on Hawking's research and on recent astronomical observations and theoretical developments, the authors offer nonspecialists an account of the laws of physics that denies the existence of a grand unified theory.

Academy Rankings Tell You a Lot, But Not Who's No. 1 in Any Field
Volume 5, Issue 40 - article #12
Jeffrey Mervis
,
Science - Volume: 330, Issue: 6000
This week's release of the long-awaited assessment of the quality of U.S. research doctoral programs by the National Academies' National Research Council will disappoint those who simply want to know who's No. 1 in any particular field, because the NRC assessment can look quite different depending on your definition of "best."

New Type of Cosmic Dust Tells of Galaxy's Violent History
Volume 5, Issue 39 - article #22
Yudhijit Bhattacharjee
,
Science - Volume: 329, Issue: 5999
On page
1622
of this week's issue of
Science
, researchers report that the cores of many of the clouds of dust and gas in which new stars and planets form are swarming with dust grains 10 times as large as those previously detected. These grains scatter starlight to produce a so-called coreshine effect, which the researchers say could be used to probe the age and history of interstellar clouds.
